Support Anti-MinuteMen Protesters in LA

An Emergency Action: A Nonviolent Protest by the May 25 Legal Defense Committee

Who: May 25 Legal Defense Committee (This committee is a coalition of organizations primarily in the Orange County area.)

When: Wednesday, June 1, 2005 at 4:00 pm

Where: In front of the Orange County District Attorney’s office. 401 Civic Center Drive, Santa Ana, California

Why: On May 25, 2005, a group of demonstrators gathered at the Women's Civic Club in Garden Grove, California to protest a speaker named James Gilchrist, the founder of the Minuteman Project. The Minuteman Project is an armed group that patrols the U.S.-Mexico border in an effort to stop undocumented immigration. At this event, a motorist by the name of Hal Netkin purposely crashed his minivan into demonstrators, and the Garden Grove Police Department decided to not file any charges against this racist activist. In addition, the police arrested five antiracist demonstrators, charging them with felonies. Numerous organizations are now planning a peaceful and nonviolent demonstration on Wednesday, June 1, 2005 in an effort to convince District Attorney, Tony Rackauckas, to drop the charges against the five demonstrators. They are also demanding D.A. Rackauckas to prosecute Hal Netkin for his actions, as well as investigate the discriminatory conduct of the GGPD.
